On the front of the sandstone gate is the lion of St. Mark, the symbol of Venice

There is a central passageway and two side passageways for pedestrians.The large room on the upper floor was for armed guards.

From the time the Venetian Walls were built in 1561, this has been the most frequently used gate. The archways were built by the Venetian Podestà Alvise Contarini in 1781, replacing a wooden bridge.
