The original interior included Mayan mosaics, murals, and reliefs. The lobby furniture and electrical features were designed in this theme as well.

The architect named the building the Aztec because he believed that the public was more familiar with the Aztec tribe, than Mayan. This building did go on to inspire the Mayan Theater in downtown LA.

The Aztec Hotel was built in 1924 on Foothill Blvd, once Route 66, in Monrovia, CA. Designed by architect Robert-Stacy Judd in the Mayan Revival-style, it became a National Historic Landmark in 1978.
