Pekin – die Hauptstadt der Volksrepublik China und eine der größten Metropolen auf der Karte der Welt.
Der Name «Pekin» lässt sich als «Nördliche Hauptstadt» übersetzen. Die ersten Siedlungen an der Stelle, wo sich die moderne Stadt erstreckt, existierte bereits in dem I Jahrtausend vor Christus. Die Geschichte Chinas hinterließ eine Vielzahl von Sehenswürdigkeiten, die jährlich Tausende von Touristen anlocken.Als die herausragendsten antiken Anlagen von Pekin gelten die Bauten der Verbotenen Stadt – des größten Palastkomplexes der Welt, die als Residenz der chinesischen Kaiser noch bis 1912 diente. An unseren Tagen ist die verbotene Stadt ein Museum der Kunstwerke und der traditionellen Architektur Chinas. Unter den antiken Denkmälern sollte man ebenfalls den Sommerpalast, die Wanpin-Festung, den Glocken- und Trommelturm hervorherben. Sie alle sind im Stadtführer verzeichnet.Andere beliebte Orte in der Stadt sind der größte Platz der Welt Tian'anmen mit einem gleichnamigen Tor, das Nationalmuseum Chinas und das Mausoleum des Regenten Mao Zedong.Das Gebiet um die Metropole wird von einem Spinnennetz aus Kraftfahrstraßen und Eisenbahnstrecken umrandet. Die Verkehrsmittel von Pekin umfassen aus U-Bahnlinien und beinahe 600 Bus- und O-Buslinien.
